Hey, Soapah family!
We’re thrilled to unveil our latest recipe in the Soapah Recipes collection: Hemp Soap. If you’re looking for a luxurious, conditioning soap that’s gentle yet effective, this one’s for you.
Why We Love Hemp Oil in Soap
Hemp oil brings a rich, nourishing quality to soap—packed with fatty acids, vitamins, and that lovely slip we all adore during lather. However, there’s just one thing to note; DOS risk is slightly higher when using hemp oil. We have tried to keep the percentage of hemp lower but enough to have a positive effect on quality to be able to lower the risk.
Hot Process vs. Cold Process: How to Use Hemp Oil
We know many of you have perfected your cold-process routine—and that’s great! You can absolutely follow the Hemp Soap recipe using cold-process. Just be mindful to store the finished loaf in a cool, dark spot to minimize any oxidation. The bars may develop a slight tone shift over time, but they’ll still be wonderfully conditioning and gentle on the skin.
But if you’re curious to experiment, hot process offers an exciting alternative—especially when you want hemp oil to serve as your superfat (the extra nourishing touch).
Hot Process Method (Hemp as Superfat)
-
Prepare lye and oils as usual.
-
Cook the soap to the gel phase.
-
Add hemp oil last, after the cook, to ensure it remains unsaponified and takes on the role of the superfat.
-
Since hot process tends to lose more water during cooking, you’ll want to increase the water percentage in your initial recipe to compensate for evaporation and help maintain workable consistency.
-
Once mixed, pour, insulate, and let cure—or in true hot-process fashion, molding and trimming can happen faster.
This lets the hemp oil’s benefits shine through, giving you a bar that’s ultra-moisturizing and protective.
Storage Tips for DOS-Sensitive Hemp Oil Bars
-
Wrap tightly in parchment or plastic once cut
-
Store in a dark, cool place to slow oxidation
-
Use or gift them within a few months for best appearance (though the bars will remain safe and luxurious beyond that!)
